City of Cape Town Begins Resurfacing Giel Basson Drive and Rothschild Boulevard Causing Nighttime Traffic Disruptions in Monte Vista

If you drive through Monte Vista regularly, here’s a heads-up you’ll want to keep in mind.

The City of Cape Town has officially started resurfacing work on two of the suburb’s busiest roads, bringing temporary disruption but long-term improvements for motorists.

Which Roads Are Being Worked On?

The resurfacing project covers Giel Basson Drive and Rothschild Boulevard, two key routes used daily by residents and commuters.

According to the City, work got underway on Monday, 2 February 2026, under the supervision of the Urban Mobility Directorate.

On Giel Basson Drive, crews are working in both directions between the N1 bridge and Rothschild Boulevard.

Meanwhile, Rothschild Boulevard is being resurfaced in both eastbound and westbound lanes, stretching from Giel Basson Drive to the Monte Vista Boulevard Circle.

Night Work to Reduce Traffic Headaches

To limit the daytime traffic chaos, the City has opted to carry out the work overnight.

Construction teams will be on site from 19:00 in the evening until 05:30 the next morning, Monday through Friday.

These hours may shift slightly depending on weather conditions.

By 06:00 each weekday, all lanes are expected to reopen so that the morning rush can continue as usual — although the City has cautioned that unexpected delays are always possible.

When Will the Work Be Finished?

If everything runs according to schedule, the resurfacing is set to wrap up by Thursday, 19 February 2026.

Until then, drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and expect slower movement through the area during nighttime hours.

Why the City Says It’s Worth the Wait

This project forms part of Cape Town’s broader push to upgrade and maintain its road network.

Similar work is currently underway on La Balle Road in Bellville’s industrial area, showing that multiple upgrades are happening at once across the metro.

Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas, has appealed for patience from both residents and businesses in Monte Vista and nearby Kaapzicht.

“Keeping Cape Town Moving”

“We ask that the public remain patient while these projects are underway,” Quintas said, noting that there’s only a limited window each year to tackle as much road maintenance as possible.

He added that keeping roads in good condition is essential to ensuring traffic continues to flow across the city.

Advice for Motorists and Residents

With congestion almost guaranteed during the night work, motorists are strongly advised to use alternative routes between 19:00 and 05:30 wherever possible.

A little extra planning could save a lot of frustration.

The City is confident the short-term inconvenience will pay off with smoother, safer roads once the work is complete.
