Chelsea fans are in uproar after Enzo Maresca’s latest remarks following their disappointing 2-1 loss to Brighton in the FA Cup.
The Italian manager’s comments have only fueled frustration among the fanbase, with many expressing their anger on social media.
Maresca Doubles Down on His Stance After FA Cup Defeat
After the loss to Brighton, Maresca risked even more backlash by claiming there could be a silver lining to the defeat: “If there is something good after a defeat, it is that we can focus on the Premier League and the Conference League.”
Chelsea now faces Brighton again this Friday, and Maresca has made it clear that his team is not ready to compete on multiple fronts this season.
He further explained, “They [the fans] are 100% fair and correct.
I grew up watching Chelsea win games and titles, but this Chelsea is not the same as that one.”
Maresca acknowledged the dissatisfaction from fans, admitting that the club isn’t prepared to challenge in all four major competitions this season.
However, he pointed out that focusing on the Premier League and Conference League could provide a more manageable path forward.
Fans Call for Maresca’s Head Following His Comments
Maresca’s words only added fuel to the fire, as Chelsea supporters took to social media to vent their frustration.
Some fans expressed their desire for the manager’s removal, with one writing, “You’re complicit in it, mate,” in response to his remarks.
Others were less forgiving, with one fan posting, “Just making excuses… you are not fit to coach Chelsea… the club is bigger than you.”
A third fan criticized Maresca for his negative outlook, saying, “Imagine a top manager saying all these negative things about where Chelsea will finish! Next he’ll be saying top half will be a good season!!” Another fan echoed this sentiment, calling the team “full of losers.”
Chelsea Fans Draw Comparisons to Tuchel’s Winning Mentality
The backlash against Maresca has also led to comparisons with former manager Thomas Tuchel, who held a much more optimistic and ambitious outlook during his time at Stamford Bridge.
In 2021, Tuchel stated, “I am here to win titles. I’m here to win games and, as a result, win titles.
This is what I demand of myself, so why should we now say anything different? We want to win now.” Tuchel’s words stand in stark contrast to Maresca’s current comments, further frustrating Chelsea fans.
Maresca Optimistic About Chelsea’s Future
Despite the criticism, Maresca remains confident about the long-term future of the club. “Absolutely, yes.
This is our goal,” he said, expressing his belief that Chelsea can return to competing at the highest level within the next five to ten years.
However, he questioned why the club should be expected to immediately win the Premier League or compete for multiple titles after only six months under his leadership.
Chelsea now has a chance to increase their lead over fifth-placed Manchester City with a win at Brighton’s Amex Stadium, with the club also still in the Conference League.
Whether Maresca’s vision aligns with the club’s ambitions remains to be seen, but for now, the pressure is mounting on him to deliver results.
