The cause of the fire that destroyed huge portions of the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital in Johannesburg last year is still unknown, according to Gauteng officials.
According to Thabo Masebe, a spokeswoman for the Gauteng Department of Health, around 30% of the hospital’s infrastructure that was destroyed has yet to be repaired.
This covers the hospital’s casualty, psychiatry, and cardiothoracic ICU wards. Renovations are planned to be completed by April of next year, according to the department.
“The origin of the fire is still unknown,” Thabo Masebe adds. “They are still waiting for the police report to see if such persons must be held guilty, and the budget has yet to be set.”
