Cavin Johnson makes bold claim amid links to Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates

Johnson’s last top flight coaching job in the DStv Premiership was at the helm of the now defunct Platinum Stars. After parting ways with Platinum Stars, he remained jobless for quite a while before he eventually got what seemed to be an unexpected call from Pitso Mosimane, who would ask him to be his assistant coach at Egyptian club Al Ahly.

Johnson would then go on to achieve success at Al Ahly as he helped Mosimane and his charges to win the CAF Champions League, the Egyptian League, as well as the CAF Super Cup. It would then come as a great shock when he would leave the Egyptian giants, and return to South African shores, a move that would see him automatically linked with the Pirates Job first, as they had just recently fired German coach Jozef Zinnbauer.

Chiefs and Pirates have coaches in place

Chiefs were also thought to have previously approached Johnson, but had decided to go for current coach Stuart Baxter in the end. Pirates then also seemed to assure the duo of co-coaches Mandla Ncikazi and Fadlu Davids that they will at least finish the season at the helm of the Soweto giants. That has all but ended Johnson’s opportunity of taking over both clubs this season, but Johnson has insisted that should he have the opportunity at either, he would make an impact.

Makes bold claim

I am honoured for my name to be mentioned around Chiefs and Pirates. I think I have the capability to work for such big teams…I can do that, It’s always difficult at this time of the season, it’s halfway through the season…most clubs are settled and many of them have 10 matches remaining. Some coaches will continue with their current contracts into next season, if Chiefs and Pirates do come around, I am sure I can make a difference.” Said Johnson to iDiski TV while speaking at Junior Khanye’s book launch.

It would be interesting to see if a coach of Johnson’s experience would be given a chance to coach either Chiefs or Pirates in the near future.
