In a significant development, Catholic Charities Fort Worth has received $47 million in federal grants despite the ongoing legal battle over frozen funds.
The organization had previously filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) after millions of dollars in federal grants for refugee services were withheld.
The Lawsuit Over Frozen Funds
Earlier this month, Catholic Charities Fort Worth took legal action, challenging the federal government’s decision to freeze tens of millions in grants meant to support refugee services in Texas.
The funds were part of a broader issue stemming from an executive order issued by former President Donald Trump, which led to the freezing of billions of dollars in federal funds.
Review of Catholic Charities Fort Worth’s Operations
In response to the lawsuit, the federal government announced last week that it was conducting a “program integrity review” of Catholic Charities Fort Worth.
The review process was completed on Friday, and by Monday, the government authorized the release of $47,426,180.17 in advance payments to the charity group.
Funds Released and Additional Requests Made
Catholic Charities Fort Worth confirmed that the payment had been deposited into its account.
On the same day, the organization filed a request for nearly $270,000 more in funding.
A joint status report detailing this will be submitted by Wednesday.
Services Provided by Catholic Charities Fort Worth
Catholic Charities Fort Worth offers a wide range of services, including legal defense for immigrants facing removal from the U.S., as well as assistance with applications and consultations for those seeking to navigate the complex immigration process.
Despite the legal challenges surrounding the frozen funds, the charity continues to provide vital support to immigrants in Texas, with the federal government’s release of these funds offering a temporary resolution to the ongoing dispute.
