Carl Niehaus ‘never served as a soldier’, report claims – and he is FUMING

It’s fair to say that Carl Niehaus isn’t happy with reports questioning his own military background this week. The outspoken former representative of the MKMVA has lashed out at claims made about his credentials as a soldier, after military insiders revealed that the 62-year-old ‘could not be verified’ as an MK member.

Carl Niehaus struggle credentials called into question

The revelations are a bitter blow for the man who has based his entire identity on the armed struggle against apartheid. Carl Niehaus is very rarely seen in public without his khakis and camouflage gear. However, he now stands accused of embellishing his experiences in the liberation struggle.

A report carried by The Citizen, featuring input from SANDF personnel, revealed that top generals could only identify Niehaus as a political prisoner, rather than an active soldier for Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK). They had no records of him being part of a battalion, or under any known military command

However, the close Zuma-ally has hit back in dramatic fashion on Friday, sharing his side of the story with South Africa. He published a detailed statement, lambasting the verification process as an ‘interrogation’. He then cried conspiracy, suggesting that there was an orchestrated plan to humiliate him.

Not a toy soldier? Zuma confidante hits back in military row

Although Carl Niehaus rejects the notion that he ‘never fought for his country’, he does accept that he never received proper training. He has defended his record as a soldier, arguing that he carried out ‘many operations’ during the struggle. Here’s a snippet of what he had to say.

“I am deeply aggrieved by the manner in which the Database Verification Committee conducted the interview. In fact it was not an interview, but instead it degenerated into an interrogation session led by Major General Mashoala, who was very aggressive and continuously shouted at me.”

“It was mainly intended to subject me to an interrogation with the preconceived purpose to try and humiliate me, and to prove an entirely subjective perception that I lacked proper training. I have never claimed that I have received all the required training for the operations that I ended up carrying out in the liberation struggle.”

“My so-called lack of ‘proper training’ that Moshoala, with the luxurious wisdom of hindsight, wanted to harp on is a matter that was not properly addressed at the time of my recruitment. Certainly 40 years later neither me, nor those who recruited me and who gave me the tasks, can do anything to correct such now.”
