Cape Town taxi strike protest causes HUGE R4m in damages

City of Cape Town Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, has revealed the extent of the damage.

Smith says an initial assessment by the City shows that damage to infrastructure totals well over R4 million. To make matters worse, that is just from the damages that the city is currently aware of.

With several buses being stoned and badly damaged, the Golden Arrow bus service is looking at R3.5 million in damages.

The City of Cape Town itself has noted damages of R275 000. Well over R380 000 worth of damages to private vehicles has also been noted.

It’s likely that many more vehicles were damaged, but the damage was not reported to the City.

Smith also revealed that three City of Cape Town traffic officials had to receive medical attention after being attacked by protesters.

“The list of incidents reported during Thursday’s chaos is extensive and includes vehicles being stoned, petrol-bombed, hijacked and looted. It cannot be the case that those behind violent protests are let off the hook time and again.”

City going after protesters to claw back funds

The City of Cape Town has drawn up a damage assessment report. The report has already been submitted to the City’s legal services branch.

Smith says that the City has previously opened civil claims against protest organsiers. In this case, he is promising to do the same.

We’re sure the taxi bosses are not going to be happy about that.
