Canadian Tourist Falls From Train in Thailand, Girlfriend Reports Him Missing

Ryan Joseph Ralph, a 24-year-old Canadian tourist from Kingston, Ontario, has died after falling from a moving train in Thailand.

He was traveling with his girlfriend, Shona Morgan, 22, from Northern Ireland, on their way to celebrate his birthday on the island of Koh Tao.

The Incident: Leaving for a Cigarette with Deadly Consequences

The couple boarded an overnight train from Bangkok bound for Koh Tao on March 20th.

A few hours into the journey, Ryan left Shona sleeping to smoke a cigarette at the end of the carriage.

Tragically, these trains often lack doors or barriers at the carriage ends.

Search Launched After Girlfriend Raises Alarm

Shona woke up to find Ryan missing and unable to be reached on his phone.

Worried, she reported him missing to authorities at the nearest station upon disembarking at 10.30 pm.

A search was launched utilizing the GPS tracker on Ryan’s phone.

Grim Discovery the Following Day

The search initially yielded no results, but the following morning, authorities received a report of a body found under a train platform at the Chet Samian Railway Station.

The body was confirmed to be Ryan’s.

Police Believe Fall Caused Injuries, Later Blood Loss

Police believe Ryan fell from the train and was struck by the platform, sustaining severe leg injuries.

He then managed to crawl under the platform but ultimately succumbed to blood loss.

An Area of Safety Concerns

The lack of proper barriers and the platform’s proximity to the tracks have raised safety concerns.

This is not the first such incident on this route; in 2014, a British tourist died under similar circumstances.

Investigation Continues, Notification of Family

Thai authorities are continuing their investigation and have notified the Canadian Embassy to inform Ryan’s relatives.

This incident highlights the ongoing safety issues plaguing Thailand’s aging railway system.
