Ebbw Vale’s young cadets are stepping into a brand-new chapter as they move into a £900,000 Joint Cadet Centre (JCC), designed to bring together both Army and Air Cadets under one roof.

The revamped facility on Beaufort Road replaces the old Army Cadet Force building, now extended and modernised to support training and community engagement.

A Long-Awaited Upgrade

The transformation, led by the Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association (RFCA) for Wales, is part of the broader Reserve Estate Optimisation Programme (REOP).

This initiative seeks to modernise cadet centres across Wales, creating spaces that meet the needs of today’s youth while streamlining resources.

The official opening took place on St David’s Day, March 1, 2026, with Brigadier Robert Aitken CBE, Lord-Lieutenant of Gwent, presiding over the ceremony.

One of the highlights was the opening of a time capsule from 1993, which contained memorabilia from 1158 (Ebbw Vale) Squadron, RAF Air Cadets, including coins and documents from the 1990s.

Facilities Built for the Future

The new centre includes classrooms, offices, a drill hall, dedicated storage, and upgraded kitchen and ablution areas.

Phil Young, Head of Estates at RFCA for Wales, explained, “REOP continues to deliver improvements to the cadet experience across Wales and the wider UK.

This project demonstrates how modernising facilities can benefit local cadet detachments and support the wider goals of the Strategic Defence Review.”

The 2025 Strategic Defence Review outlined plans to expand Cadet Forces by 30% by 2030, underlining the importance of updated facilities to attract new recruits.

Local Leaders Praise the Investment

Second Lieutenant Greg McFarlane, Commander of the Ebbw Vale detachment of Gwent and Powys Army Cadet Force, said the upgraded JCC is a game-changer for local youth: “This building provides a modern, welcoming space for cadets and adult volunteers.

It opens up opportunities for young people to engage with both the Army Cadet Force and the RAF Air Cadets, helping increase participation and nurture future leaders.”

Flying Officer Daniel Eacott, Officer Commanding 1158 Squadron, added, “The new Joint Cadet Centre marks a new chapter for our Squadron and the youth of Ebbw Vale.

This investment secures our future, allowing us to develop cadets into responsible citizens and prepare them for any career path they choose.

Celebrating our 85th anniversary this year, we hope this centre serves the next generation for decades to come.”

Impact and Consequences

The JCC will not only enhance training facilities but also strengthen community ties, making cadet programs more accessible and attractive to local youth.

By providing modern, flexible spaces, it supports long-term recruitment goals and prepares cadets for future opportunities in the military and civilian sectors.

What’s Next?

With the Ebbw Vale centre now operational, attention will turn to maximising its usage, expanding youth engagement, and fostering closer collaboration between Army and Air Cadets. The model may also inspire further upgrades in other Welsh cadet centres under the REOP initiative.

Summary

The £900,000 Joint Cadet Centre in Ebbw Vale represents a significant investment in youth development, combining upgraded facilities with a community-focused approach.

The opening ceremony celebrated the past, acknowledged local history, and looked toward a future of growth and opportunity for cadets.
