Bulls, Stormers ramp up the ‘banter’ again before north-south derby

Earlier this season, Stormers coach John Dobson admitted they used a social media video from the Bulls as extra motivation ahead of a URC clash that was ultimately won by the Cape-based side.

Prior to that derby, the Bulls opted to ‘rev up the banter’ in a comical video aimed at the Stormers as the South African teams headed back into United Rugby Championship action.

“Symptoms of DHL Stormers fans syndrome include deep sadness, regret, frustration, anger, extreme emotional distress, irritation, longing for an opportunity to support the Vodacom Bulls. General feelings of hopelessness, disorientation, vertigo and an empty trophy cabinet,” part of the video proclaimed.

However, it ultimately backfired as the Stormers went on to claim a shock win at Loftus to end a long-running unbeaten run for the Bulls in Pretoria.

Speaking after the match, Dobson said his job to motivate his team was made easier by the video, with the Cape side ultimately enjoying the last laugh.

“I was grateful the video was doing the rounds and we played it in the team room on Friday,” Dobson revealed.

“I didn’t speak to the team and I hope there will be Stormers fans recovering from hangovers on Sunday.

“However, anything that creates interest in rugby, I’m in for and it did helped create some interest.

“There was fun involved, but it help our players a fair bit.”

Now, as the teams get set to go head-to-head once again, the Stormers’ social media team have asked the Bulls if they were “planning any more motivational videos this week?”

“Would be great if you could put something together for us again,” the post added.

The Bulls quickly responding with a chirp of their own, stating: “Sorry for not responding sooner, we were still recovering from our unassisted win over Ulster. But, yes you can count on us for a video!”
