Bulls coach Jake White on why Duane Vermeulen’s return is a problem

The fixture will also see the return of Duane Vermeulen to Loftus Versfeld , for the first time since leaving the Bulls for Ulster late last year.

Vermeulen enjoyed big success at Loftus

Springbok Vermeulen enjoyed two stints at the Bulls, with the first being a Super Rugby stint that ended in the play offs in 2019, ahead of the World Cup.

The second was more successful, however, and ended in silverware as he lifted the Currie Cup back to back, as well as the Super Rugby Unlocked trophy as a captain. His rein did not end the way he would’ve wanted to however, as the Tshwane-based were shocked by Benetton in a Rainbow Cup final loss.

Even though Vermeulen was already part of the Springbok squad and didn’t play for the Bulls in Italy, lifting that trophy would have been another trophy and feather to his cap. He is now set to come back to his former stomping ground, with Ulster, and will no doubt be on a mission to get one over his former teammates. Bulls director of rugby Jake White is well aware of that, and has admitted that seeing his former captain line up against them will pose his side challenges.

White is aware he knows the Bulls DNA

“They’ve also got Duane. He’ll know a lot more about us more than any other player. He was the captain here and knows the intricacies of everything we’ve done in the past two years. That’s something we’ll have to think about, but it won’t get any easier because if you want to be in the playoffs, you’ll have to play the big Irish teams again.” Said White as per Sports24
