Muhammadu Buhari’s Decision to Withhold WASSC Certificate

Former Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, recently shed light on his deliberate choice to withhold his West African Senior School Certificate (WASSC) during the 2015 general elections, despite public demand for its release.

In a revelation shared in a book authored by his former media adviser, Femi Adesina, Buhari disclosed the reasoning behind his decision.

Buhari’s Revelation

Buhari explained that in 2018, while rummaging through his belongings, he came across copies of his certificate.

Surprisingly, he had always possessed it but intentionally refrained from making it public, allowing those critical of him to indulge in their opinions.

Attestation Certificate Presentation

Chapter 5 of Adesina’s book highlighted an incident in November 2018 when the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Registrar and officials presented an attestation certificate to Buhari.

During this event, Buhari emphasized the significance of his WASC examinations in 1961, asserting that without this academic qualification, he wouldn’t have been eligible to attend prestigious military institutions such as the Defence Services Staff College in India (1973) and the United States Army War College.

High School Integrity

Recalling his high school days, Buhari shared insights into the challenges of committing examination fraud, emphasizing the difficulty faced by him and his colleagues during their nine years in boarding school.

Despite acknowledging the difficulty, he highlighted the necessity of taking a military examination, testing proficiency in English, Mathematics, and General Knowledge, reflecting the colonial influence on educational standards in the country.

Military Training Requirements

Expanding on the military examination, Buhari detailed the subjects examined, including the importance of English and Mathematics, as well as the practical aspects involving Geography.

He underscored the training received in navigating challenging terrains, relying on basic tools like a compass, and applying mathematical principles such as the Pythagoras Theorem to determine one’s position.

Buhari’s decision to withhold his WASSC certificate was driven by his intent to maintain his stance against those criticizing him, and his narrative sheds light on the stringent academic and training requirements during his formative years as a military officer.
