A woman who survived breast cancer has come forward to reveal how a comment made by Strictly Come Dancing star, Wynne Evans, left her feeling humiliated and hurt.
Cath Jones, 51, a breast cancer survivor, shared her experience of attending a charity event where the opera singer made an insensitive joke about her baldness, which she found “repulsive.”
The Incident That Shocked Cath Jones
Cath, who was still recovering from chemotherapy at the time, attended a black-tie charity event for the Welsh cancer charity Tenovus.
Dressed in a sequined dress and sitting at a table, she was taken aback when Evans made a joke about hair – a sensitive subject for her after losing her hair during chemotherapy.
Evans had been commenting on fellow celebrity Lawrence Llewellyn-Bowen’s hair when he allegedly made a remark that “some of us had had their hair especially done for the occasion.”
Then, Evans turned to Cath and added that “some hadn’t bothered,” implying that her baldness was something to joke about.
Cath was so mortified by the comment that she immediately got up, walked out of the room, and went to the bathroom. “It was just horrible,” she recalled.
“I was a cancer patient with no hair, and he did something like that in front of so many people.”
Cath later shared how Lawrence Llewellyn-Bowen’s wife had followed her to check if she was okay.
A Lasting Impact of an Inappropriate Joke
The incident, which Cath describes as a “personal and public attack,” left her deeply hurt.
She said she would never forget how Evans made her feel that day.
“He wasn’t funny then, and he isn’t funny now,” she said.
“I can guarantee that he doesn’t even remember the remark he made in an attempt to raise a laugh.”
Despite her strong character, which helped her bounce back after the experience, Cath admitted she was devastated by the remark at the time.
“He is a liability,” she added, expressing how disgusted she felt by the behavior of someone who should have known better.
Evans Under Fire for More Than One Incident
This revelation comes amid Evans facing scrutiny for other inappropriate comments.
Recently, the Go Compare star made headlines after a crude joke about a potential three-way sex session with Janette Manrara during the launch of the Strictly Come Dancing live tour.
The remark, which included sexual slang, sparked outrage and led to him stepping away from his radio show and other public commitments for self-reflection.
Cath, who has since recovered from cancer and now runs a successful dog grooming business in Caerphilly, South Wales, expressed her disbelief that Evans hadn’t learned from past mistakes.
“When I heard about his comment on the Strictly live tour, I just thought: ‘What’s the matter with the man? He hasn’t learned his lesson,'” she said.
A Message to Evans and Others
Cath’s experience is a stark reminder of how words can deeply affect others, especially in sensitive situations.
As she reflected on how Evans’ behavior impacted her, she emphasized how important it is for people in the public eye to understand the consequences of their actions and words.
She also mentioned that she cannot stand to listen to his BBC Radio Wales show anymore, given the way she feels about him.
Her story highlights how personal, hurtful experiences can leave lasting scars, and how empathy and respect should always come first, especially when it comes to people dealing with serious health challenges.
