Brazilian Navy Uncovers WWII Shipwreck of Vital de Oliveira More Than 80 Years After It Was Sunk by Nazi Forces Off Rio de Janeiro’s Coast

Discovery of WWII Warship Off Brazil’s Coast

A piece of history has resurfaced off Brazil’s coast after over 80 years.

The wreckage of a Brazilian warship, the Vital de Oliveira, which was sunk by Nazi forces during World War II, has been found.

The discovery came in 2011, when a distress call led the Brazilian Navy to investigate a location near Rio de Janeiro.

Upon arrival, divers spotted a cannon on the seafloor, sparking further exploration.

Only now, with the help of advanced equipment, has it been confirmed to be the lost vessel.

What Happened to the Vital de Oliveira?

The Vital de Oliveira was attacked by a German submarine in 1944, resulting in the tragic loss of 100 of the 270 crew members.

The ship had been a key part of Brazil’s naval efforts during the war, delivering military supplies and personnel along the coast.

Brazil entered WWII on August 22, 1942, and joined the Allies in February 1943.

The Vital de Oliveira’s tragic fate came when a torpedo struck in the dead of night, sinking the ship.

Technology Brings the Sunken Ship Back to Life

The breakthrough came last month when the Navy’s Underwater Archaeology Division revisited the wreck.

With the help of modern sonar technology, experts were able to pinpoint the exact location of the ship and capture high-resolution images of the hull.

Lieutenant Captain Caio Cezar Pereira Demilio, part of the team, explained that they used a multibeam echo sounder and side scan sonar to capture these detailed images.

The technology gave them the chance to document the shipwreck in ways never possible before.

Exploring the Site and What’s Next

The team conducted a total of 32 sounding lines using multibeam sonar and nine lines with side scan sonar, covering a large area around the wreck.

The goal is to create a 3D model of the shipwreck, which will help experts assess the condition of the vessel and its relationship to the environment around it.

The Navy also plans to send remote-operated underwater vehicles (ROVs) to investigate the site even further.

Brazil’s Contribution in WWII

Brazil played a significant role during WWII, contributing around 25,900 men who fought as part of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force.

Sadly, about 1,900 soldiers and sailors lost their lives during the war.

Brazil’s naval forces saw significant action, with the country losing 31 merchant ships, three warships, and 22 fighter planes by the end of the conflict.

Other WWII Shipwreck Discoveries

The find of the Vital de Oliveira isn’t the only WWII shipwreck uncovered in recent months.

In October 2024, researchers discovered another sunken warship off the coast of California.

The wreck, identified as the USS Stewart, a US Navy Destroyer captured by Japanese forces during the war, was found almost 3,500 feet below the surface.

The use of robotic sonar technology helped locate this 314-foot-long ship, which had been lost for 82 years.

This growing collection of sunken warships continues to remind us of the past and the incredible efforts to preserve the memories of those who served.
