Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown has gotten candid about his hair loss journey, which became a viral topic earlier this year.
The 2024 NBA Finals MVP faced widespread attention in October when a hair product from his head accidentally transferred onto Knicks player OG Anunoby during a game, sparking social media buzz.
Similar moments with Detroit’s Ron Holland and Washington’s Kyshawn George only added fuel to the fire.
Brown has now partnered with a hair growth supplement company, using the opportunity to discuss both his personal struggles and the broader impact of hair loss on mental health.
From Braids to Breakthroughs
“I used to have braids, and when I’d take them out, I was shedding a lot,” Brown told People.
At first, the hair loss didn’t seem significant, but over time he noticed it worsening.
He experimented with topical serums and other remedies but admitted that “nothing seemed to work.”
“It was an emotional journey,” Brown said.
“My hair was fine a couple years ago, and then a couple years later it’s not.
It’s easy for the world to make fun of someone who’s losing hair, but they don’t see the mental health side—confidence, self-belief, all that.
For me, I’ve been to dark places mentally, so I know how serious it can be.”
Emphasizing Mental Health
Brown highlighted how hair loss can be “spirit breaking” for many and encouraged fans to consider the psychological toll.
“It’s not just hair—it’s your confidence, your self-belief. That’s what makes it tough,” he explained.
New Routines and Nutrafol Partnership
To combat thinning hair, Brown has incorporated Nutrafol supplements into a larger wellness routine that also includes sleeping in a hyperbaric chamber and using red light therapy.
“I take vitamins already, so to have something science-backed that’s easy to integrate helps put me back on track,” he said. “I’m still in a fight.
I’m not bald yet. My hair is thinning, but it’s still growing. We’re still in this battle.”
Finding Humor in Viral Moments
Reflecting on the viral incidents, Brown joked about leaving his mark on other players.
“Those dudes should be grateful. They’re lucky I left my residue on them.
I should get a thank you card: ‘You have the residue of a champion on you. You’re welcome.’”
Other Controversies
The hairline saga isn’t the only time Brown has made headlines recently.
Earlier this month, he stirred conversation with an unusual comment about Toronto Raptors star Scottie Barnes, claiming he had “extra chromosome strength.”
While initially criticized, Brown quickly clarified and apologized, and the matter has largely settled.
Through it all, Brown’s candidness about hair loss and mental health shows a more personal side of the Celtics guard—balancing life on and off the court while navigating the pressures of fame and physical scrutiny.
