Having won the first four tournaments of the World Rugby Sevens Series as the big guns were prevented from competing due to Covid-19, the Blitzboks crashed back to earth with defeats to the USA, Fiji and Argentina last weekend at the Singapore Sevens.

While they started better this weekend in Vancouver, they ultimately came horribly unstuck once again in the Cup quarter-finals, this time losing to Samoa 28-17.

Zain Davids, Selvyn Davids and Ronald Browns scored tries for the Blitzboks, while Selvyn Davids added a conversion.

Vaovasa Afa, Vaa Apelu Maliko (2) and Faafoi Falaniko scored tries for Samoa, while Melani Matavao added all four conversions.

Neil Powell’s men will now play France in the 5th-8th playoffs at 23:00 (SA time) on Sunday.

France narrowly lost 24-21 to Fiji in their quarter-final.
