Kidnappers apparently took over the heavily traveled roadway on Tuesday morning, but the Nigerian Army drove them into the forest, according to an eyewitness.
Some of the kidnappers were killed by security personnel who engaged them in a gunfight, while others escaped into the jungle with critical wounded.
Travellers were detained for several hours while security personnel dealt with the hoodlums.
According to reports, a stray bullet struck the shoulder of an unnamed young man driving a Lexus SUV.
The undeterred gunmen, however, appeared on the highway Wednesday morning, laying ambush for travellers plying the road.
The security operatives again came to the rescue of the motorists, as they engaged the hoodlums.
