Tensions spiked when a young ball kid unexpectedly collapsed during a match, sending players and spectators into a moment of worry.
Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported, but the incident reminded everyone of the unpredictable moments that can occur on court.
Van Assche Cruises Past Echargui Amidst Incident
French talent Luca van Assche secured his place in the second round of qualifying with a straight-sets 6-4, 6-4 win over Tunisia’s No. 22 seed Moez Echargui.
The match had been progressing normally until the ball kid, stationed behind the baseline, suddenly stumbled and fell just as Van Assche was preparing to serve in the second set.
Echargui immediately turned his attention to the fallen youngster, rushing over and calling for help from the sidelines.
With the assistance of the umpire, the ball kid was safely escorted off the court and rested under a parasol while Tennis Australia staff checked on their condition.
The cause of the mishap remains unclear, and Tennis Australia has yet to comment.
Match Highlights and Van Assche’s Power Play
Despite the brief scare, the match continued. Echargui found himself trailing 5-3 in the second set and tried to mount a comeback at the net, showcasing some brilliant volleys.
However, Van Assche’s consistent power proved too much, allowing the 21-year-old Frenchman to serve out the set 6-4 and secure the victory.
Ranked No. 165 on the ATP Tour, Van Assche will now face Estonia’s Daniil Glinka in the next qualifying round.
Van Assche is no stranger to Melbourne Park, having reached the third round of the main draw in 2024 before being eliminated by Brazilian star Joao Fonseca.
The main Australian Open draw is set to kick off next Sunday, while the qualifying rounds continue throughout the week.
