The Today show family is facing a deeply personal crisis as Savannah Guthrie’s mother, 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, has gone missing from her Tucson, Arizona home.
The disappearance has captured national attention, with NBC dedicating prime coverage to the case.
The situation became even more serious after law enforcement officials called in homicide detectives, and the FBI confirmed it is now aware of the investigation.
FBI and Homicide Units Step In
NBC’s chief crime reporter Tom Winter explained Monday morning that authorities are treating the case with heightened concern.
“The FBI is also aware of this case, given the nature of what was found at the scene,” Winter said, noting that some details are being withheld to avoid compromising the investigation.
While specifics about the ‘concerning evidence’ at Nancy’s home have not been released, it’s clear that investigators are taking every precaution.
Search Efforts Intensify Near the Border
Nancy’s residence is located near the U.S.-Mexico border, prompting a multi-agency search effort.
Customs and Border Protection agents have joined Pima County sheriff’s deputies, deploying drones and a sheriff’s plane to track her.
Sheriff Chris Nanos emphasized that the operation is still officially a search-and-rescue mission, though he acknowledged that foul play cannot yet be ruled out.
Savannah Guthrie Speaks Out
Guthrie, who is currently off the air recovering from throat surgery, shared her first public comments about her mother’s disappearance through a statement aired on Today.
She expressed gratitude for the support they’ve received:
“I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers, and messages of support.
Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom.
We thank law enforcement for their hard work on this case and encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s office at 520-351-4900.”
Investigators Provide Reassurances
Authorities have indicated that Nancy was not showing any signs of cognitive impairment at the time she went missing, which adds urgency and mystery to the search.
The story hit close to home for the Today team, with co-host Craig Melvin telling viewers, “This is very concerning to us… We don’t typically get involved at a scene like this, but it’s very concerning.”
Melvin described Nancy’s disappearance as “deeply personal” for the hosts and crew, highlighting the emotional impact on those covering the story firsthand.
