In a move that’s grabbing attention across the political spectrum, Attorney General Pamela Bondi is stepping up her stance on Second Amendment protections.
Her latest announcement? A brand-new 2nd Amendment Task Force within the Department of Justice, aimed at defending gun owners and reversing what she views as harmful overreach from previous leadership.
Bondi Says Gun Owners Faced Unfair Pressure Under Previous Administration
According to Bondi, the last administration made things unnecessarily difficult for everyday Americans trying to exercise their right to bear arms.
She claims that responsible gun owners and vendors were caught in a wave of restrictive policies that went too far.
With this new task force, she says, the DOJ is shifting gears.
“The last administration placed an undue burden on law-abiding citizens,” Bondi said in a statement.
“Our new 2nd Amendment Task Force will bring together the full power of our department’s legal and policy teams to push forward President Trump’s pro-gun agenda and shield gun owners from excessive regulation.”
Rolling Back Restrictions and Reviewing Controversial Rules
This announcement came on the heels of two big regulatory reversals.
The Department of Justice and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) recently scrapped the Enhanced Regulatory Enforcement Policy.
They’re also taking a closer look at two controversial rules: Final Rule 2021R-08F, which dealt with stabilizing braces, and Final Rule 2022R-17F, which involved how “engaging in the business” of firearms dealing is defined.
Both of these rules had sparked debate among gun rights advocates, who argued that they created confusion and unfair penalties for people who weren’t intentionally breaking the law.
A Strategic Push to Align with Trump’s Gun Policy
Bondi’s move isn’t just about revisiting policy—it’s also a clear effort to align with former President Trump’s stance on gun rights.
Her task force will pull in legal minds from across the DOJ to make sure future policy and litigation efforts are in line with that agenda.
The full memo outlining how the task force will work has been released, offering a deeper dive into the administration’s strategy.
But at the heart of it all, Bondi says the goal is simple: protect the constitutional rights of Americans who legally own and use firearms.
