Anthony Albanese joined Indonesian President Joko Widodo on a bike tour.

During his second abroad trip since seizing power, Anthony Albanese wobbled as he cycled beside Indonesian President Joko Widodo.

After receiving a ceremonial welcome on Monday, the Prime Minister joined Joko Widodo on a short bike tour around the presidential palace in Jakarta.

As they cruised around the royal grounds before of their private one-on-one encounter, the two leaders conversed.

Mr Albanese said he was moved by the Indonesian president’s offer of a bike ride because many people in the nation come from low beginnings and rely on bicycles to get around.

Both the prime minister and President Widodo came from humble beginnings, according to the prime minister.

Mr Albanese is on his second abroad trip and first bilateral visit since winning the election on May 21. He flew to Tokyo for Quad security alliance meetings barely two days later.

Indonesia is one of Australia’s closest neighbors and most important international partners, with a population of about 300 million people.

Mr Albanese was greeted with a guard of honor and a marching band procession when he arrived at the Bogor Palace.

Mr Albanese planted a tree with President Widodo before the formal meeting between the two leaders began.

The Prime Minister had earlier in the day hosted a business breakfast with a delegation of Australian business leaders and CEOs.

Mr Albanese briefed the team on Australia’s objectives to strengthen its ties with Indonesia and Southeast Asia, as well as to expand underdeveloped trade and investment ties.

Following a meeting with her Indonesian counterpart, Foreign Minister Penny Wong stated that strengthening ties with Indonesia and the broader area would be critical in the face of rising Indo-Pacific tensions.

‘We live in a time where the region is being reshaped and what is important is that countries work together to ensure that the region remains peaceful, prosperous and respectful of sovereignty,’ she said.
