With the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy fast approaching, the Proteas are facing some unsettling news regarding key players.
The tournament, set to begin in February, will see South Africa missing the services of two significant players due to injuries, adding a layer of uncertainty to their preparations.
Anrich Nortje Ruled Out for the Champions Trophy
Proteas fast bowler Anrich Nortje has been ruled out of the upcoming SA20 and the Champions Trophy due to a back injury.
The 31-year-old, who has not featured in any international cricket since the T20 World Cup in 2024, will miss the chance to represent his country on the global stage next month.
Nortje’s absence is a significant blow to South Africa’s bowling attack.
With only 22 One Day Internationals (ODIs) to his name and 36 wickets in total, Nortje’s career has been disrupted by injuries, limiting his opportunities to play consistently for the national team.
His replacement for the Champions Trophy has yet to be confirmed, but many expect Gerald Coetzee to step into his shoes for the tournament.
Proteas Still Have Depth in Bowling Department
Despite the loss of Nortje, the Proteas’ bowling lineup remains strong with several alternatives.
Kwena Maphaka, Wayne Parnell, Dane Paterson, and Coetzee are all potential replacements who could be called upon to fill the gap left by Nortje.
The Proteas’ depth in the bowling department means they can still field a competitive team, even without one of their key fast bowlers.
Rassie van der Dussen Faces Injury Setback
In addition to Nortje’s injury, another setback for the Proteas comes with the news of Rassie van der Dussen’s injury.
During an SA20 match for MI Cape Town, the veteran batsman sustained a finger injury while fielding.
Although he briefly left the field for medical attention, he was later seen with an ice pack applied to his right hand’s ring finger.
Van der Dussen’s injury raises concerns about his availability for the Champions Trophy, with the team already facing the loss of Nortje.
Proteas Begin Their Campaign Against Afghanistan
The Proteas will kick off their 2025 ICC Champions Trophy campaign on 21 February, facing Afghanistan at the National Stadium Karachi in Pakistan.
South Africa last claimed the Champions Trophy in 1998, when the tournament was first launched, and have only reached the final once since then.
The team will be looking to overcome the challenges posed by injuries and start the tournament on a strong note.
