Andy Reid reassures fans that Travis Kelce can still dominate as a tight end in Kansas City despite the Chiefs’ disappointing season

After another challenging season for the Kansas City Chiefs, head coach Andy Reid opened up about the future of star tight end Travis Kelce.

Reid emphasized that Kelce still has the skills to compete at the highest level if he chooses to return for another season—but for now, no decisions have been made.

Kelce, 36, just wrapped up his 13th year in the NFL.

With the season behind him, he’s weighing whether to keep playing or step away from the game, potentially shifting focus to life with his fiancée, pop superstar Taylor Swift.

A Season to Forget

The Chiefs ended the season with a 6-11 record, missing the playoffs and falling short of expectations.

Players completed their exit interviews and cleared out lockers on Monday, closing the door on a difficult year.

Fans are eagerly awaiting Kelce’s announcement, aware that his decision could define the next chapter of his legendary career.

Reid addressed the matter carefully when asked about Kelce’s plans:

“We’ll get to all that. Right now, you’ve got a little bit of time before all that stuff really needs to take place.

I’m not trying to avoid your question, but that’s what’s real right now.
I know everybody wants an answer right this minute.

It’s something that you’ve got to go through, there are a lot of variables there, but we all love Travis, we know that.
Travis can still play and I’m not questioning that part or any of it.

I just know there’s time, it’s the same way as last year.

You’ve got a little bit of time there to figure everything out.”

Reid’s words underline the team’s confidence in Kelce, even as the tight end contemplates a possible exit.

Kelce Reflects on His Next Steps

Speaking to reporters on Sunday night, Kelce admitted he’s taking time to think things through, focusing on family and personal priorities.

“First things first, I just love this team. I’m proud of the way we finished this, even though it ended the way it did.

Guys still showed up. Gave it their all and that’s all you can ask for, man.

I’ve got so much love for this team, this organization and the people here.

I’ll spend some time with them, go through exit meetings tomorrow, get close to the family and figure things out.

Who knows? Either it hits me quick or I’ve got to take some time.

Last year was a little bit easier.

I think I knew right away I wanted to give this one a shot. I don’t know. We’ll see.”

Despite the team’s struggles, Kelce made it clear he entered the season prepared and committed.

“Obviously we didn’t do as well as a team, but I feel like I came into the season prepared and ready to rock and roll with the right intentions.

The ball just didn’t go our way in a lot of those close games unfortunately.

If I do choose to come back, that’s something I’ve really got to focus on—making sure I’m available and ready for those moments.”

A Career-Defining Decision Looms

The end of this season was a particularly tough pill to swallow, finishing with a loss to the league’s lowest-ranked Raiders in Las Vegas.

Footage from the locker room captured Kelce looking drained, a clear reflection of the weight of the choice he faces: continue his career or retire after 13 seasons.

Speculation about Kelce stepping away from football has intensified in recent weeks, and while Reid’s confidence is encouraging, the decision remains entirely in the hands of the veteran tight end.

Fans and teammates alike will be watching closely as he takes the necessary time to weigh his next move.
