Anambra: 2 million voters to decide next governor – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says a total of 2,252,471 registered voters are expected to participate in 5,720 polling units across the state in the forthcoming Anambra gubernatorial election scheduled to hold on November 6, 2021.

This was made known by INEC Director, Voter Education and Publicity, Mr Victor Aluko during a workshop for journalists on the election process and procedures held in Awka.

He said out of the 2,252,471 registered voters, 77,475 were registered newly during the continuous voter registration exercise in the state, adding that their permanent voter cards would be ready for collection before the election.

The Director explained that the commission opted for Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) as a high tech-driven mechanism geared towards achieving the set objective.

“We are doing everything possible to make the Anambra election successful, believing that the security situation will improve and then move over to Ekiti State,” Aluko said.

He described the system as an effective way to stamp out observed challenges in the use of card readers during previous elections.

The State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Nkwachukwu Orji, represented by Head of Voter Education and Publicity, Samuel Nimem, urged participants to utilize knowledge gained and contribute their quota to the success of the election.

In a paper presentation on “Technological Innovations for the Conduct of Anambra Governorship Election” the Head, ICT State Headquarters, Engr Chukwuemeka Nnaji, said the system would enhance credibility and transparency of the process and guarantee one man, one vote.

He reaffirmed the commission’s desire of having a credible poll as sacrosanct, adding that it would also deploy more portals to achieve set goals.
