Alec Baldwin Opens Up About His Struggles with PTSD and Mental Health After the Rust Shooting in New Reality Show

In a raw and emotional moment, Alec Baldwin has revealed the deep toll the tragic shooting on the set of Rust has taken on his mental health.

In his new reality show, The Baldwins, Alec opens up about the emotional and psychological challenges he faced after the incident.

For the actor, the aftermath has been so tough that he admits he feels more at peace when he’s asleep than awake.

The Tragic Accident and Its Aftermath

The incident, which occurred in October 2021, saw cinematographer Halyna Hutchins tragically lose her life when a prop gun Baldwin was holding discharged.

The event rocked the film world and Baldwin personally, and it didn’t take long before the mental and emotional consequences began to take their toll.

By October 2022, Alec had reached an undisclosed settlement with Hutchins’ family regarding their wrongful death lawsuit.

Later, in August 2024, his trial for involuntary manslaughter was dismissed.

Struggling with PTSD and Mental Health Decline

In his confessional during the TLC show, Alec spoke openly about the emotional strain.

He admitted that the past year had been incredibly difficult for him, saying, “There were times I’d lay in bed and just go, ‘I can’t get up.’ And that’s not like me at all.”

His wife, Hilaria Baldwin, also shared how Alec’s mental health had visibly declined.

She explained that Alec was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and revealed the painful reality of the dark thoughts he had been battling. “In his darkest moments, he says, ‘Why am I still here? Why couldn’t it have been me?’” she recalled.

Hilaria’s Emotional Support and Family Focus

Hilaria, who has been by Alec’s side throughout this tough period, described how hard it’s been to watch the emotional toll it’s taken on him.

She spoke about Alec waking up feeling like, “Oh God, why did I wake up?” She added that the emotional pain he experienced was so overwhelming at times that it was hard to see any way forward.

Despite the dark moments, Hilaria has remained focused on their children, finding solace in trying to bring happiness to them, even when it’s difficult for the adults.

“I know what we’re going through is maybe unique, but every family goes through hard times.

All we can do is do our best and try and make our kids happy,” she shared.

The Impact of Family and Their Journey Forward

Alec himself expressed how much his family has been his anchor.

In a deeply emotional moment, he said, “Honestly, from the bottom of my soul, I don’t know where I’d be if I didn’t have you and our kids.”

He admitted that the support of his wife and children had been crucial to his survival through the trauma.

Elsewhere in her confessional, Hilaria also reflected on the tragedy that claimed Halyna Hutchins’ life.

“Halyna lost her life in the most unthinkable tragedy,” she said, adding that it’s a pain the family will carry with them forever.

Alec, in turn, expressed more pain for Hilaria’s suffering than his own.

“I always feel more in pain about you than me,” he said, acknowledging the heavy burden his wife has carried through all of this.

The Baldwins and Their Ongoing Journey

The Baldwins premieres on TLC on Sunday, February 23, at 10/9c, and new episodes will air weekly. If you miss it, you can stream it on Max.

Alec and Hilaria’s journey through these difficult times will be shared on the show, offering an intimate look at their family’s healing process.
