Advocate Maselesa Teffo’s ‘criminal past’ has come under spotlight following his arrest inside the Pretoria High Court on Thursday afternoon.
Teffo had just finished his business for the day, as a representative for four of the accused in the Senzo Meyiwa trial. But, before he could properly wrap things up for the day, Teffo was being handcuffed and marched out of the dock.
WHY WAS TEFFO ARRESTED IN 2021?
Advocate Teffo was arrested twice in two weeks in 2021. He was charged with contempt of court and released after paying bail. The charge related to his alleged failure to appear before court in a labour-related matter.
According to City Press he was again arrested in connection with a charge of a threat of assault and trespassing.
He reportedly spent time in Sun City Prison.
DRAMA UNFOLDS AT THE SENZO MEYIWA TRIAL
On Monday, 25 April, Kelly Khumalo’s lawyer, Magdalene Moonsamy was asked to leave the Pretoria High Court as Senzo Meyiwa’s trial got underway.
Judge Tshifhiwa ordered Moonsamy to leave the dock moments before proceedings started, after she turned up as part of a watching brief for her client.
Moonsamy was given her marching orders ‘to preserve the purity of court processes’.
It has been argued that Khumalo, who allegedly witnessed the fatal shooting in 2014, cannot be given the luxury to ‘tailor her evidence’ based on the testimony of others. The singer’s lawyer gladly complied.
“From Friday’s proceedings, there was an objection that was raised in terms of my presence and access to documents (which is only the charge sheet which is public knowledge). Unlike other private participants in the matter who have access to the docket and further information.
“I wasn’t asked to leave on a permanent basis My role is not depleted in the matter and it’s for the purposes of complying with the court, it’s not a permanent decision.”
Magdalene Moonsamy
There are mixed reactions over Teffo’s arrest. Some feel that he is being bullied for asking hard hitting questions when cross examining Forensic Investigator, Sergeant Thabo Mosia. It is not yet clear why Teffo was arrested.
