This recognition highlights not just his talent but the hard work he has poured into his craft.
A Journey of Hard Work
Mthembu shared his thoughts with Showmax, revealing how receiving four SAFTA nominations has deeply affected him.
“I’m truly happy. When you love your work, you keep pushing every year,” he expressed.
Even during times when he didn’t receive nominations, he remained committed to improving his skills.
“I kept telling myself that I needed to work hard not just for the awards, but to keep improving in my job.”
He emphasized how significant it is to be recognized by the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) at the SAFTAs.
“I feel blessed. I’m grateful,” Mthembu said, acknowledging the love and passion he invested in the character of Dingiswayo.
Gratitude to Supporters
The award-winning actor also took a moment to express his gratitude towards everyone who supported him throughout his journey, from executives to his family, including his mother and wife.
“I also thank myself for pushing through,” he added, showing a sense of self-appreciation that reflects his resilience.
Honoring Heritage
When discussing the success of Shaka iLembe, Mthembu attributed it to the series’ strong connection to South African roots.
“It’s a story that truly speaks to our roots and honors the heroes who came before us,” he noted.
He acknowledged the Zulu nation’s legacy, thanking figures like Bab’ Zulu and King Misuzulu for their support in allowing the show to thrive.
“Our kids will grow up watching this show again and again,” he said, highlighting its importance in preserving history for future generations.
Acknowledging Recognition
This year, Shaka iLembe made waves at the SAFTAs by taking home an impressive 12 awards.
Mthembu’s nominations included Best Supporting Actor for The River and Best Actor for Outlaws in the telenovela category, as well as Best Actor in a TV drama for Adulting and Shaka iLembe.
Looking Ahead
Reflecting on his journey, Mthembu admitted to Sowetan that he felt a mix of excitement and shock about his nominations.
“It’s been a long time coming,” he said, sharing that after five years of hard work, these accolades affirm he’s on the right path.
“There’s no big or small award; a SAFTA is a SAFTA. It’s actually a South African Oscar, and I’m ready to own one,” he declared.
Currently, Mthembu is busy filming the second seasons of Adulting, Outlaws, and Shaka iLembe. Fans are eager to see what he’ll bring to the screen next!
