Tshwane’s political landscape has been thrown into turmoil following the departure of ActionSA from the DA-led multi-party coalition, which ultimately led to the removal of Cilliers Brink as the city’s mayor.
The fallout has sparked a war of words between the Democratic Alliance (DA) and ActionSA, with both parties accusing the other of contributing to the instability in the capital.
DA Criticizes ActionSA for Destabilizing Government
Solly Msimanga, DA Gauteng leader and former Tshwane mayor, has not held back in his criticism of ActionSA’s decision to support the African National Congress (ANC)’s motion to remove Brink.
Msimanga accused ActionSA of betraying the coalition’s efforts to maintain stability and progress in Tshwane, claiming that their actions have opened the door for the ANC to regain control.
He expressed concern that Tshwane, once on a path of recovery, is now at risk of falling into the same pattern of urban decay and service delivery failures seen in other municipalities like Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni.
According to Msimanga, ActionSA’s move was nothing more than a “power grab,” playing into the hands of a “power-hungry” ANC that is more interested in exploiting the city’s resources than in good governance.
ANC Celebrates Brink’s Removal
On the other side, the ANC in Gauteng has embraced the developments in Tshwane, framing the ousting of Brink as a positive step toward the “re-strengthening” of both the city and the province.
The ANC views Brink’s removal as a turning point, with ANC Gauteng secretary Thembinkosi Nciza calling it a “gift” to the people of Tshwane, who he believes deserve leadership that prioritizes their well-being.
Nciza did not shy away from criticizing the DA-led multiparty coalition, describing it as an example of the DA’s failure to lead effectively across the province.
He highlighted issues of maladministration and racial tensions under the DA’s leadership, not only in Tshwane but also in Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg.
What Lies Ahead for Tshwane?
As Tshwane navigates through this period of political instability, both sides of the debate are preparing for what comes next.
The DA is left grappling with the challenge of maintaining influence in the city’s leadership, while the ANC and ActionSA look to cement their positions.
For the residents of Tshwane, the future remains uncertain as they await the next steps in this unfolding political drama.
