Ackerley Sports Group revives efforts to secure a commercial partnership with SA Rugby in South Africa

Seattle-based Ackerley Sports Group (ASG) is reigniting efforts to secure a commercial deal with SA Rugby after its initial $75 million bid for a 20% stake fell through last year.

The renewed push comes amid growing financial challenges for South African rugby and the backing of new SA Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie.

Springboks’ Financial Future in Jeopardy

According to SA Rugby president Mark Alexander, the organization faces a dire financial outlook without innovative revenue strategies.

Rivals like New Zealand’s All Blacks have secured private equity deals to bolster their finances, making a similar move critical for the Springboks.

Initial Bid Stumbles

ASG’s exclusive negotiating window expired at the end of 2024 after failing to gain approval from SA Rugby’s member unions.

The proposed deal, which included $75 million for commercial rights and significant board control, was met with resistance from unions connected to South Africa’s wealthiest individuals and calls for delays from the former sports minister.

“This vote derailed efforts to globalize and commercialize the Springboks,” ASG stated, warning that SARU’s financial stability remains at risk.

A Plan for Local Involvement

Founders Chris and Ted Ackerley remain confident in their value-creation strategy and are open to collaborating with South African consortiums.

Their final proposal even included a 50% South African partnership to address local concerns.

ASG has expressed determination to ensure any future plan aligns with the needs of SARU’s member unions, emphasizing a collaborative approach.

Minister McKenzie Backs ASG

Gayton McKenzie, South Africa’s new sports minister, supports ASG’s continued involvement, highlighting the need for partnerships with financially robust institutions to elevate South African sports on the global stage.

“The Ackerley Sports Group has demonstrated the insight and expertise required to achieve this,” McKenzie said in a statement, urging SARU to reconsider its stance.

The Path Forward

ASG is now working with professional advisers and is open to engaging with approved South African consortiums to craft a viable proposal.

The group remains committed to securing the Springboks’ future through innovative and mutually beneficial solutions.
