A heavy branch fell on a man’s head while he was resting under a tree, causing a serious brain injury.

Last week, Grant Dowding, 42, had just ended a shift when he decided to pay down on a park bench in Perth.

A branch fell on his head while he was relaxing, covering him in blood.

The IGA employee claimed he was ‘bamboozled’ by the poor luck and that he froze as a result of the occurrence.

‘All I could see was trees,’ Mr Dowding told 7News. Despite the long, deep incision across his head, Mr Dowding walked himself to a doctor and believed he was lucky.

[I was] unlucky to choose this bench, lucky to survive,’ he told the West Australian.

‘To be honest, I’ve had harder hits to the head,’ Mr Dowding said.

The IGA worker (pictured) said he was 'bamboozled' by the bad luck and said he thinks he froze after the incident

The father of two will seek compensation from the local government in the area, the City of Vincent, for damage done to his $5,000 ebike at the time.

It’s not the first time a tree has caused such a devastating blow.

Last year a Wollongong teenager was impaled in the chest by a tree branch after falling from a height as he was helping his mother in the garden.

He was rushed to hospital where medical workers helped remove the branch.
