The cause of the “Holmfield Hum” could not be determined by an official investigation despite considerable testing, it was revealed yesterday.

The suffering of Homfield, a Halifax suburb, was covered by the Daily Mail in February in an article titled “Why is this town being driven insane by a hum?” Calderdale Council’s inquiry, however, has not confirmed any of the hypothesized origins for the peculiar buzzing sound.

Some people blamed extractor fans at a local plant, while others thought it was a clandestine U.S. military program or extraterrestrials. Yesterday, Yvonne Conner, 50, a local resident, stated, ‘It’s very aggravating.’

The cause of the “Holmfield Hum” could not be determined by an official investigation despite considerable testing, it was revealed yesterday.

She continued, “The hum keeps me awake, and if it stops, it also wakes me up.”

“Last night, I was able to hear it even with the television sound turned up.”The plight of Homfield ¿ a suburb of Halifax ¿ was taken up by the Daily Mail in February in a feature headlined ¿Why is this town being driven half mad by a hum?'

Some people claim they are unable to hear the low-frequency disturbance, adding to the mystery.

In response to a petition signed by more than 500 individuals, the Calderdale council initiated a “extensive” study into the reason.

However, it was revealed yesterday that despite leaving “no stone unturned,” its specialists were unable to locate “proof of a statutory noise nuisance.”

Councillor Jenny Lynn, cabinet member for public services and communities, told the Local Democracy Reporting Service, “We are aware that this is not the outcome the complainants had hoped for, but we have exhausted all avenues of investigation.” She stated that investigations may be reopened if new evidence emerged.

Similar ‘hums’ have been observed around the world for decades, with the cause notoriously difficult to pinpoint, according to scientists.
