Nigerian University Academics Praise Government for Salary Increases, Seek Post-Subsidy Adjustments

Introduction:

The Congress of Nigerian University Academics (CONUA) has expressed its appreciation to the Federal Government for the recent salary increments of 35% and 25% for staff members in tertiary institutions across the nation.

However, CONUA noted that these salary adjustments were implemented prior to the removal of fuel subsidies and conveyed its intent to request further salary enhancements in the aftermath of the subsidy removal.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, CONUA, through its National President, Dr. ‘Niyi Sunmonu, conveyed its commendation for the salary increments.

The group acknowledged the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of academic staff, as announced by the former Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, in September 2022 at the State House.

Request for Post-Subsidy Salary Adjustment:

CONUA’s statement emphasized the importance of addressing the economic realities following the removal of fuel subsidies.

It underlined the need for continued engagement with the government to secure post-subsidy removal increments in academic salaries.

CONUA aims to advocate for improved lecturer salaries in Nigerian universities, not only to boost academic morale but also to counteract the issue of brain drain from these institutions.

Anticipated Non-Professorial Cadre Increase:

During discussions with the former Minister of Labour and Employment, CONUA delegates advocated for a 25% increment in the non-professorial cadre’s salaries.

The Minister pledged to take this request to relevant government bodies, with the possibility of initiating payments as early as May 2023.

Ensuring Competitive Academic Compensation:

CONUA’s commitment to engaging with the government underscores the importance of competitive compensation for academics.

By seeking post-subsidy salary adjustments, the organization aims to align salaries with the current economic landscape and retain talented educators within Nigerian universities.
