Ukraine and Russia: Latest Update

After officials said more than 50 civilians trying to flee by rail from a neighboring territory were killed in a missile attack on Friday, Ukraine warned citizens in the eastern Luhansk region to flee Russian shelling.

* According to British military intelligence, Russian activities continue to focus on the Donbas region, Mariupol, and Mykolaiv, with Russian naval forces continuing to launch cruise missiles.

* According to Interfax news agency, Russian soldiers damaged an ammo storage at the Myrhorod Air Base in central-eastern Ukraine, citing Russia’s Defense Ministry.

* The Kremlin stated on Friday that the “special operation” in Ukraine might be over in the “near future,” with the Russian military and peace negotiators achieving their objectives.

South Africa 

President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa says he and US President Joe Biden agreed on the need for a ceasefire and engagement between Russia and Ukraine during a telephonic chat on Friday.

The United Nations General Assembly decided last week to suspend Russia’s membership in the Geneva-based Human Rights Council.

South Africa abstained from voting because the proposed resolution was deemed premature.
