Thousands of lighting strikes across Auckland and lower Northland

More than 4000 lighting strikes on Monday morning have been recorded in Auckland and lower Northland as the bad weather continues.

Aucklanders woke up on Monday to a number of thunder rumbles and lighting strikes with Niwa reporting more than 4000 strikes from 7am to 8am, and more than 700 in five minutes.

MetService has now lifted the severe thunderstorm watch in Northland, with the bad weather now moving south over Auckland.

However, there remains a high risk of thunderstorms and rain for Auckland until around the middle of the day, according to MetService.

Strong winds are also expected with gusts up to 90-110kmph.
