Dr Harry Musson Shares Monthly Pay for Three Days a Week as UK GP and Receives Mixed Reactions Online

A conversation about doctor salaries in the UK has reignited after a former NHS doctor shared what he earned while working part time. Dr Harry Musson, who now helps international medical graduates transition to practicing in the US, gave viewers a peek into his earnings when he worked three days a week as a GP in Britain.

Revealing the Numbers Behind Part-Time GP Work

Dr Musson clarified that the payslip he showed reflected his income earlier this year as a salaried GP.

“Most GPs in the UK work part time,” he explained, noting that his gross salary for a three-day week amounted to £6,000 per month.

After deductions such as income tax and national insurance, his take-home pay came to £3,603.64.

For context, the average GP salary in the UK for 2025/2026 ranges between £76,038 and £114,743 annually, depending on experience and hours worked.

Mixed Reactions from the Public

While some praised his transparency, others were quick to express frustration.

One viewer wrote, “I work 80 hours a week and I don’t earn this.

I didn’t realize how much doctors earn, and I totally lost any support I may have had left.”

Another added, “I started at 9am today and just finished at 1.30am. I’d be happy on this for only three days. GPs need a reality check about how hard normal people work.”

Some took a more sarcastic approach, with one commenting, “For writing prescriptions and preventing access to specialists? Seems generous.”

Another quipped about NHS pay: “All that money and yet you can never see a GP.”

Supporters Defend Doctor’s Pay and Transparency

Not everyone was critical, however. Many commenters defended Dr Musson, highlighting the work and responsibility involved.

One wrote, “People always get angry about what you earn but don’t want to do what you had to do to get it.”

Another explained, “Three days a week as a GP equals 40 hours of work—work that is literally life-saving.

Your salary has to reflect this. So no, £3,600 a month isn’t too much at all. I hope GPs get paid even more.”
