What began as a normal Monday evening in Ballymahon took a sudden and troubling turn when a serious road accident unfolded on Main Street.

Just after 5pm, residents and passers-by were met with flashing lights and emergency sirens after a pedestrian was struck by a car in the heart of the town.

Emergency Services Rush to Main Street

Gardaí and emergency crews arrived quickly at the scene around 5:15pm, responding to reports of a collision involving an elderly man.

The pedestrian, understood to be in his 80s, had been hit by a vehicle driven by a teenage male.

The atmosphere was tense as responders worked to stabilise the injured man.

Elderly Man Taken to Hospital With Serious Injuries

The injured pedestrian was carefully removed from the roadway and transported by ambulance to Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore.

Gardaí later confirmed that his injuries are believed to be serious, though no further update on his condition has yet been released.

Teen Driver Escapes Injury

According to garda sources, the driver of the car — an adult male in his late teens — was not injured in the collision.

He remained at the scene as gardaí began their initial inquiries into how the incident occurred.

Road Closures and Forensic Examination Planned

Main Street remains closed to traffic, with local diversions currently in place to ease disruption.

Garda Forensic Collision Investigators are expected to carry out a detailed technical examination of the scene on Tuesday morning, which may impact traffic for some time.

Gardaí Appeal for Witnesses and Camera Footage

Investigators are now asking for the public’s help as they work to piece together the moments leading up to the collision.

Anyone who was in the area between 5pm and 5:30pm and saw what happened is urged to come forward.

Gardaí are particularly interested in speaking with road users or pedestrians who may have camera footage, including dash-cam recordings, from around the time of the incident.

How to Contact Gardaí

Anyone with information is asked to contact Longford Garda Station on 043 335 0570, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or to speak with any Garda station.

What’s Next?

As the investigation continues, gardaí will analyse forensic findings and witness accounts to establish the full circumstances of the collision.

Further updates are expected once more information becomes available.
