Court hears guilty plea from man who murdered young university student following relationship ending in Mapperley

It was supposed to be an ordinary evening in Mapperley, Nottinghamshire, but what unfolded was anything but ordinary.

A promising young university student, known for her kindness and bright personality, had her life brutally ended by a former acquaintance.

The community is still reeling from the shocking loss of 23-year-old Steph Irons, an aspiring psychologist whose future was tragically taken from her.

A Relationship Turned Deadly

The man responsible, 40-year-old Adedapo Adegbola, admitted to stabbing Steph after their short-lived romantic relationship ended.

Neighbors and friends described the attack as completely unexpected.

Adegbola, who had previously worked with Steph, arrived at her home on the evening of Tuesday, October 21, and carried out the fatal attack.

Fleeing the Scene

After the stabbing, Adegbola fled the area, leaving behind a trail of evidence, including blood-stained trainers and clothing, across Mapperley and nearby Carlton.

His movements over the following day took him through Mansfield, Worksop, Sheffield, and Hull before eventually returning to Nottingham.

There, he surrendered himself to police at Oxclose Police Station, leading to his arrest on suspicion of murder.

The Investigation Unfolds

Police were alerted by Steph’s colleagues, who had received a series of worrying messages on the night of the attack.

Emergency services arrived to find her critically injured in her living room.

Despite their efforts, Steph was pronounced dead shortly after.

During police interviews, Adegbola refused to provide any answers, repeatedly saying “no comment.”

However, investigators relied on CCTV footage, witness statements, and digital evidence to track his movements, ultimately building a case strong enough to secure his guilty plea.

Guilty Plea and Sentencing

In a brief hearing at Nottingham Crown Court, Adegbola pleaded guilty to murder.

Judge Nirmal Shant KC confirmed he faces a mandatory life sentence, with the only remaining detail being the minimum term he will serve.

Steph’s family was present in court as the guilty plea was read, enduring the devastating confirmation of what they already feared.

Police Statement

Detective Inspector Stuart Barson, the lead investigator, described the case as “tragic” and praised the courage of Steph’s family.

He highlighted that Adegbola made no effort to call for help after the attack, instead focusing solely on fleeing the scene and disposing of evidence.

“The evidence gathered against him left him no choice but to plead guilty,” Barson said.

“I hope that this outcome helps Steph’s family in beginning to come to terms with their heartbreaking loss.”

Remembering Steph Irons

Steph’s family paid tribute to their “bright young star,” recalling her infectious smile, warmth, and compassion for others.

She had recently completed both a degree and a master’s in clinical psychology and was preparing to pursue a doctorate in the field.

“She was a beautiful, loving, and caring daughter, sister, niece, cousin, and friend,” the family said in a statement.

“Our bright young star has had her future taken away, and while we can’t comprehend what has happened, she will forever be with us.”
