As South Africa swelters under a widespread heatwave, KwaZulu-Natal’s coastline is offering a welcome reprieve.
Durban residents can look forward to milder conditions, with temperatures expected to peak around 24°C—pleasant compared to the blistering heat further inland.
Forecaster Mpho Rasimphi highlighted that coastal towns like Port St Johns will enjoy slightly warmer, yet still manageable, weather at 25°C.
“The coast will stay warm but comfortable,” Rasimphi noted, offering some relief to those seeking outdoor activities without the scorching sun.
Inland Scorches and Fire Risks
While the coast enjoys temperate conditions, the interior of KwaZulu-Natal will feel the full brunt of the heatwave.
Towns such as Pietermaritzburg and Ladysmith are forecast to reach highs between 29°C and 32°C, bringing with it a heightened risk of fire.
Rasimphi cautioned, “Northern parts of KwaZulu-Natal face high fire danger conditions, with runaway fires possible if strong winds continue.”
Farmers and rural communities are being urged to stay vigilant, as dry spells and hot temperatures make veld fires more likely.
Dangerous Weather Patterns Across the Country
The heat is not isolated to KwaZulu-Natal’s interior.
Northern Cape, Northwest, and Free State are expected to experience strong and potentially damaging winds.
Meanwhile, Mpumalanga and Limpopo will see partly cloudy skies with pockets of intense heat.
Even along KwaZulu-Natal’s more moderate coastal belt, Rasimphi stressed that fire risks persist.
“Dry grassland and gusty winds can carry fires into unexpected areas,” he warned, reminding residents to exercise caution, especially when handling flammable materials.

With such varied weather across the province, local authorities are urging everyone to take precautions.
From limiting outdoor fires to monitoring local alerts, staying informed could prevent minor sparks from turning into major disasters.
