Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem lashes out at CBS host Margaret Brennan over naming ICE officer involved in Renee Good shooting in Minneapolis

A heated exchange erupted on Sunday morning when Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem appeared on CBS to discuss the death of Renee Good.

The conversation quickly turned tense after CBS host Margaret Brennan mentioned the name of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer involved in the fatal shooting.

Noem, visibly frustrated, interrupted Brennan, saying, “Well don’t say his name! I mean, for heaven’s sake, we shouldn’t have people continue to dox law enforcement when they have an 8,000 percent increase in death threats against them.”

Despite Brennan pointing out that the officer’s name, Jonathan Ross, was already public, Noem insisted that repeating it could endanger him and his family.

The Officer’s Safety at the Center

Noem stressed that Ross was “attacked” by Good’s vehicle and that both he and his family have been facing threats ever since the incident.

She added, “People have attacked him and his family, and they are in jeopardy. And we have law enforcement officers every day who are getting death threats, and getting attacked at their hotels.”

Brennan tried to pivot the discussion to Ross’s medical condition after reports emerged that he suffered internal bleeding following the January 7 incident.

Noem responded that she could not discuss his health records, saying, “I know that you know that it in itself is his prerogative to discuss his health,” but assured viewers that Ross was healing.

Investigations Underway

Questions about whether Ross would face an investigation were met with Noem reiterating that all ICE procedures and investigative protocols were being followed.

She explained, “We are following the exact same investigative and review process that we always have under ICE and under the Department of Homeland Security and within the administration.

The exact same policy that the Biden administration used.”

Brennan pressed further, asking if Ross had been placed on administrative leave, referencing statements from the Minnesota governor.

Noem avoided specifics but confirmed that “there always is” a review of law enforcement officers’ actions when they respond to incidents, emphasizing the accountability built into their oath to protect the public.

The Shooting of Renee Good

The deadly encounter began when Good allegedly refused to comply with ICE officers during an anti-ICE protest in Minneapolis.

Paramedics found the 37-year-old mother-of-three unresponsive inside her Honda SUV with four gunshot wounds, including two to the chest, one to the forearm, and one to the head.

Footage from the scene shows Ross firing three shots at the vehicle as it moved toward him.

The SUV then collided with two parked cars before stopping.

Witnesses reported that Good had blocked the road for several minutes prior to the shooting, and her wife, Rebecca, was seen filming the incident.

Focus on Rebecca Good

Authorities are reportedly investigating Rebecca Good’s actions leading up to the fatal shooting.

NBC News reports that the probe will examine her ties to activist groups and her conduct at the protest, where she acted as a legal observer.

This investigation has already sparked controversy, with at least six federal prosecutors resigning in protest over the order to investigate her.

Protests and Security Measures

Good’s death has ignited protests across Minnesota and nationwide.

As of Sunday morning, reports indicated that 1,500 troops were on standby for potential deployment in response to the demonstrations.

The tragedy continues to fuel debate over law enforcement accountability, protester safety, and the handling of sensitive information like officers’ names.
