NDLEA Seizes Nearly Two Thousand Kilograms of Illegal Drugs and Secures Over a Hundred Convictions in Jigawa State Nigeria Amid National Fight Against Substance Abuse

The battle against illicit drugs in Jigawa State saw a major push last year, as the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) ramped up operations across the state.

With a firm commitment to safeguarding communities, the agency made significant strides in curbing drug trafficking and abuse in 2025.

Massive Drug Seizures and Convictions

In a remarkable feat, the NDLEA’s Jigawa Command seized a total of 1,944.389 kilograms of illegal drugs, valued at roughly N2.8 billion on the market.

This included 441.973 kg of cannabis sativa, 1,373.886 kg of psychotropic substances, and 128.520 kg of other abused drugs.

State Commander Hassan Kabaju, while briefing journalists at the Command’s headquarters in Dutse, revealed that 136 drug peddlers were convicted out of 577 arrests made throughout the year.

The arrested individuals consisted of 558 males and 19 females, underscoring the agency’s determination to tackle the problem head-on.

Efforts Beyond Arrests

The NDLEA didn’t stop at enforcement alone.

According to Kabaju, 552 drug users received counselling, with 59 males referred for treatment and rehabilitation at the Command’s Drug Demand Reduction Unit.

The agency’s holistic approach emphasizes not just apprehension but also recovery and reintegration.

Educating the Public

A key component of the NDLEA’s strategy is prevention.

In 2025, the Jigawa Command delivered 39,383 drug prevention lectures and advocacy talks in schools, including tertiary institutions, as part of its War Against Drug Abuse campaign.

These efforts aim to inform and protect young people from the dangers of drug use.

Overcoming Challenges

Despite these successes, Commander Kabaju acknowledged the hurdles facing the agency, particularly a lack of vehicles, administrative tools, and operational equipment.

Still, he assured that these challenges would not halt the agency’s mission to reach every corner of Jigawa’s 27 local government areas.

A Call for Continued Collaboration

Kabaju commended the dedication of the NDLEA personnel in Jigawa and expressed hope that their work would continue to bring pride to the agency.

He also thanked the public for their ongoing support, stressing the importance of community collaboration in the fight against drug trafficking and abuse.

“The NDLEA will continue to intensify its efforts to combat drug abuse and trafficking in Jigawa State,” Kabaju affirmed, highlighting the agency’s unwavering commitment to a safer and healthier community.
