The Premier League transfer market is heating up, and Tottenham Hotspur appear to have taken a decisive lead in signing England midfielder Conor Gallagher.
The 25-year-old Atletico Madrid star is now reportedly closer to a permanent move to Spurs after the North London club moved ahead of Aston Villa in the race for his signature.
According to BBC Sport, Tottenham are expected to complete a £35 million deal for Gallagher after confirming they are willing to meet Atletico Madrid’s valuation in full.
Villa, who had previously considered themselves favorites for the England international, were reluctant to meet Atletico’s demands, proposing an initial loan with an option to buy—a plan that ultimately failed to sway the Spanish side.
A Permanent Deal in the Making
Atletico Madrid have made it clear that they are open to selling Gallagher outright this summer, and Tottenham’s readiness to commit to a permanent transfer has put them firmly in pole position.
While personal terms with the midfielder are still being negotiated, sources suggest it’s largely a formality, with both sides keen to finalize the deal swiftly.
Gallagher himself is eager to resolve his future as soon as possible, ideally before Atletico’s Copa del Rey clash with Deportivo on Tuesday night, so he can settle in ahead of the upcoming season.
Premier League Return Boosts Gallagher’s Ambitions
For Gallagher, a return to the Premier League represents more than just a new club—it’s an opportunity to reignite his international career.
The midfielder spent last season in Spain after leaving Chelsea, and he believes regular playing time in England could strengthen his chances of earning a more consistent role in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad ahead of the World Cup.
So far, Gallagher has only featured once under Tuchel, playing 59 minutes in England’s 3–1 friendly defeat against Senegal.
He’s eager to put himself back in contention and showcase his high-energy style on the pitch.
Tottenham Seeks Midfield Reinforcements
Spurs’ interest in Gallagher has intensified due to injury problems in midfield, with Rodrigo Bentancur sidelined for at least three months.
Tottenham are looking to bolster their central options, and Gallagher’s dynamic style and stamina are seen as ideal for manager Ange Postecoglou’s system.
With the deal reportedly close to completion, all eyes are on Tottenham to see if they can officially welcome Gallagher back to the Premier League in time for the new season.
