Fox Sports analyst Greg Olsen found himself at the center of controversy after a comment he made during Sunday night’s NFL broadcast left fans stunned.
The slip came during the coverage of a game between the Buffalo Bills and the Chicago Bears, and it quickly drew attention online for all the wrong reasons.
Attempt at Humor Backfires
Olsen, who was moved to Fox’s No. 2 broadcast team last season following Tom Brady’s arrival, was working alongside Joe Davis when they welcomed Bills general manager Brandon Beane into the booth.
At that point, Buffalo was trailing 28-0 at halftime, and Olsen tried to lighten the mood by giving Beane a playful nickname.
Unfortunately, what was meant to be a harmless joke went horribly wrong.
Olsen added an “r” to the end of Beane’s last name—a move that unintentionally turned into a derogatory racial slur targeting Mexicans.
Shockingly, he repeated it multiple times on air.
Fans React With Shock and Disbelief
The reactions from NFL viewers were immediate.
Many fans were confused, unsure if they had heard Olsen correctly, while others expressed outright offense.
Some brushed it off as a misguided attempt at banter, but the backlash was strong enough to put Olsen’s judgment under scrutiny.
Fox Sports has been contacted by Daily Mail Sport for comment regarding the incident, but no statement had been released at the time.
A Wider Problem on the Field
This incident wasn’t isolated.
Over the same weekend, during a preseason game between the Indianapolis Colts and Green Bay Packers, Colts analyst Rick Venturi used the same racial slur while referring to backup quarterback Jason Bean.
Like Olsen, Venturi’s comment drew widespread criticism and disbelief from the online community.
Questions Remain
The repeated use of this offensive term has left fans and viewers questioning how such language continues to appear in broadcasts, even in casual or playful contexts.
With multiple incidents over the same weekend, the NFL community is left wondering what steps networks and analysts will take to prevent such controversies in the future.
