If you’ve been enjoying the slightly warmer winter days lately, don’t get too comfortable — things are about to take a cold turn in Gauteng.

Starting Monday, residents should prepare for a noticeable drop in temperatures, though the skies will mostly stay clear.

Winter Isn’t Over Just Yet

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a heads-up: while the week is expected to stay dry, the mornings will be especially icy.

Think crisp air, frosty windows, and the kind of cold that makes you want to stay wrapped in a blanket all day.

SAWS is advising everyone to layer up, especially in the early hours when the cold will bite the hardest.

Even though July has been relatively warmer than June, it’s not going out quietly.

Some areas in Gauteng could see morning lows of just 2°C as the month winds down.

What to Expect Day by Day

Pretoria is set for a chilly start to the week.

Monday’s forecast includes a low of 4°C and a high of around 15°C.

Meanwhile, Johannesburg will be even colder, starting the day at 3°C and warming up slightly to 13°C by midday — before cooling down again in the evening.

On Tuesday, there’s a slight bump in temperatures, with Johannesburg expected to peak at 14°C.

Still no rain in sight, though, which means dry but icy conditions will persist.

By Wednesday, Gauteng may finally get some relief.

Temperatures should begin to climb gradually, possibly hinting that the worst of winter is behind us as we inch closer to August.

Cooler Weekend Temperatures Roll In

As for this past weekend, Saturday saw a relatively warm afternoon, especially in the northern parts of the province where temperatures touched 23°C. But that warmth was short-lived.

SAWS expects cooler weather to settle in again by Sunday, setting the stage for the week ahead.

Interestingly, earlier predictions warned of a strong cold front hitting Gauteng.

However, SAWS has since updated the outlook, confirming there’s no cold front or rain expected in the coming days — just plain, old-fashioned winter cold.

So, Which Month Felt Colder to You?

Now that July is nearly behind us, we’re curious: did June feel colder for you, or has July taken the win in the frostbite department?
