Judge Tosses Out Indictments Against James Comey and Letitia James Over Prosecutorial Misconduct in South Carolina

What looked like the start of Donald Trump’s plan to strike back at two of his biggest adversaries—James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James—has hit a wall.

A South Carolina judge abruptly shut down the entire case, ruling that the indictments never should have moved forward in the first place.

How the Case Fell Apart

In a sharply worded decision, Judge Cameron Currie said the indictments were tainted by mistakes inside the grand jury process, describing them as the result of “prosecutorial misconduct.”

According to the ruling, the errors were serious enough that the charges simply couldn’t stand.

Spotlight on Trump’s Hand-Picked Prosecutor

Part of the judge’s reasoning centered on Lindsey Halligan—the attorney Trump personally backed.

Halligan, who stepped in as interim U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, oversaw the push to indict Comey and James.

But Judge Currie didn’t mince words about her qualifications, noting she’s a former White House aide with no previous experience as a prosecutor.

The court concluded that she wasn’t legally appointed to the role, meaning anything she brought forward—indictments included—was invalid on arrival.

What This Means for Comey and Letitia James

The ruling wipes out Trump’s high-profile retaliation effort against the former FBI director and the New York attorney general, two officials who have been thorns in his side for years.

With the indictments tossed entirely, both Comey and James are in the clear from this particular legal threat.

More Developments to Come

The decision marks a dramatic and embarrassing setback for Trump’s attempt to go on the offensive.

And with both sides already lawyering up, this is almost certainly not the final word on the matter.
