Mauricio Pochettino lashes out at journalists after USMNT secures record-breaking 5-1 victory against Uruguay in the United States

Mauricio Pochettino had plenty to celebrate on the pitch, but his post-match mood told a different story.

The US Men’s National Team thrashed Uruguay 5-1 in a stunning friendly, marking their largest victory against a non-Concacaf side since 2011.

Four goals came in the first half alone, leaving fans buzzing.

Yet the former Tottenham boss seemed unable to fully enjoy the moment.

Instead, he appeared irked during his press conference when questioned about his squad rotation, suggesting the reporter’s question had struck a nerve.

A Press Conference Spirals

The Argentine manager has experimented widely during his 13-month tenure, handing out caps to 71 different players and compiling a record of 13 wins, seven losses, and two draws.

When asked about “regular players,” Pochettino fired back with a pointed: “Who are the regular players?” He continued, clearly frustrated, suggesting that perhaps the press conference should be paused and restarted.

“Because it’s like we were the opposite, losing 5-1. I am the USA coach, not the janitor,” he told reporters.

The exchange went on, with Pochettino pressing for clarity on what the journalist meant, and questioning which players were supposedly “more experienced.”

His message was clear: each player who performs deserves recognition, and he won’t diminish anyone’s effort.

Balancing Pressure with Progress

The tension revealed the pressures Pochettino faces as the US gears up for its home World Cup in just over six months.

Despite early challenges, the coach remains focused on building team unity and maintaining a consistent philosophy.

“What I really appreciate from the team, and all of the staff, is how we start to connect together,” Pochettino said.

“And that is the most important thing to arrive at the World Cup and to have a chance to challenge all of the big teams.

Nine changes from Paraguay, but we keep the idea, the philosophy, the faith, the fight, the togetherness.”

Shutting Down Rumors About Tottenham Return

Speculation that Pochettino might leave the USMNT for a Premier League return has followed him since his Chelsea and Tottenham days.

Following Ange Postecoglou’s departure from Tottenham after their Europa League win, rumors resurfaced.

“I’ve seen the rumors; we are 100 coaches on the list. Don’t be worried about that,” he said.

“I’m so happy in this moment and we cannot talk about this type of thing.

Today it’s not realistic—look where I am, look where we are. The answer is so clear.”

Eyes on 2026

With the World Cup looming, Pochettino is determined to keep his squad focused and cohesive.

While the press conference highlighted his frustration, his message was ultimately one of commitment, confidence, and preparation.

The USMNT may have cruised to victory against Uruguay, but their manager knows the real test is still ahead.
