Wayne Rooney has named his top three Premier League performers so far this season — and, predictably, his picks have sparked plenty of debate online.
The Manchester United legend opted for players who have impressed on the pitch but stirred mixed opinions on social media, rather than automatically choosing the league’s biggest names.
Rooney’s Surprising Trio
Speaking to Amazon Prime Sport, Rooney revealed his selections.
First up was Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo.
In just 11 matches this season, Semenyo has bagged six goals and three assists.
“I think he’s been great for Bournemouth, carrying on his form from last season,” Rooney said, praising the forward’s consistency and impact.
Next, Rooney highlighted Bryan Mbeumo. “I think he’s been really good for Brentford, even after a tricky start for the club,” he explained.
“He’s shown quality week in, week out.”
Rounding out the trio was Arsenal’s Viktor Gyokeres.
Rooney noted the forward’s work rate, determination, and ability to hold the ball up.
“Arsenal have been crying out for a No 9 for a few years,” Rooney said.
“He’s stepped in, shown commitment, and scored some important goals.”
Fans React on Social Media
As expected, Rooney’s picks didn’t sit well with everyone.
Supporters were quick to point out the absence of Erling Haaland, who already has 14 Premier League goals this season and recently helped Norway secure World Cup qualification.
Many also questioned why midfield stars like Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo, Arsenal’s Declan Rice, or Granit Xhaka from Sunderland weren’t mentioned.
Some fans went further, suggesting Rooney’s choices reflected his struggles as a manager, referencing his short-lived spell at Birmingham City.
“It’s no great shock he’s not cracked it as a coach with this take,” one commenter wrote.
Another added, “I like Rooney but this is clearly why he constantly fails as a manager (laughing out loud).”
Rooney’s Growing Reputation as a Pundit
While his managerial future remains uncertain, Rooney’s punditry has been earning praise.
Liverpool legend Graeme Souness is among his admirers.
“I like listening to Wayne Rooney as a pundit because he talks common sense,” Souness told Daily Mail Sport.
“If you’re putting together an all-time Manchester United team, Wayne Rooney is one of the first names on the sheet — he was a real warrior.
I love Wayne Rooney as a player, and I like to listen to him — he has authority.
Some of the other pundits, I turn the sound down.”
Balancing Debate and Insight
Rooney’s choices show he’s not afraid to champion underrated performers, even if it invites criticism.
Whether fans agree or not, his opinions continue to spark conversation — and as a pundit, that might be exactly what he’s aiming for.
