Greer Grammer, daughter of Frasier star Kelsey Grammer, is speaking out to challenge claims that she benefited from nepotism in Hollywood.
The 33-year-old actress, known for MTV’s Awkward, The Goldbergs, and Netflix’s Deadly Illusions, insists her career path was carved out independently, despite her famous surname.
Contrary to popular belief, Greer reveals she spent much of her childhood apart from her father, a fact that shaped both her personal life and perspective on her career.
A Childhood Marked by Distance
“My dad left when I was 4, and then I didn’t meet him again until I was 16,” Greer shared during a recent episode of the Pretty Basic podcast.
She recalls a brief encounter at age 11 in a Blockbuster store — a meeting she ran away from — but says their real reconnection didn’t happen until her mid-teens.
“It was at a Christmas tree lot when I was 16. He asked, ‘Are you Greer?’ and I said, ‘Yes, I am.’
He started to introduce himself and I was like, ‘I know who you are.
Duh,’” she recounted. From that moment, they exchanged numbers and began reconnecting over lunch and shared time, marking the start of a long-overdue relationship.
Memories of a Distant Father
Though she didn’t grow up with Kelsey in her daily life, Greer has flashes of memory from before the estrangement.
She remembers attending Frasier tapings and even her preschool performance of The Wizard of Oz, moments the pair have since reflected on together.
“These are all very specific memories. I can see them when I think about them, but after that, I don’t know,” she admitted.
Therapy has helped her untangle the emotional fallout from growing up largely without her father.
Building a Relationship in Adulthood
Since reconnecting, Greer and Kelsey have been seen spending time together in public and even sharing the screen.
Greer appeared on Season 2 of the Frasier reboot, playing Alice, the adult daughter of Frasier’s former radio sidekick Roz Doyle, played by Peri Gilpin.
Despite the late reconnection, Greer insists her career is entirely her own achievement.
“The biggest misconception about me is that I had advantages because of my dad,” she explained.
Kelsey Grammer’s Expanding Family
Meanwhile, Kelsey’s personal life has continued to grow.
This year, he welcomed his eighth child with his fourth wife, Kayte Walsh, 46.
The couple, married for 14 years, already share three children: daughter Faith, 13, and sons Kelsey Gabriel, 11, and Auden James, eight.
Kelsey first met Walsh in 2009 while she was working as a flight attendant on one of his London flights.
A Complex Fatherhood Journey
Kelsey’s journey as a father began in 1983 with daughter Spencer, now 42, from his first marriage to Doreen Alderman.
He later had two more children — Mason, 24, and Jude, 21 — with third wife Camille Meyer during their 13-year marriage, which ended in 2011.
Through decades of personal ups and downs, Greer’s story stands out as one of resilience, showing that even with a famous parent, forging her own identity in Hollywood was a path she navigated largely on her own.
