Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green found himself in a tense moment courtside during Sunday night’s 124-106 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans.
A fan repeatedly heckled him, chanting “Angel Reese,” prompting the veteran forward to step in and confront the situation directly.
What Sparked the Incident
The altercation occurred just before halftime. Green approached the front-row fan, Sam Green, 35, standing mere inches from him.
Words were exchanged, with Sam claiming Green swore at him and threatened physical action.
Game officials quickly intervened, ushering the Warriors star away while arena staff addressed the fan.
Green Explains His Side
After the game, Green clarified the situation. “He just kept calling me a woman,” Green said.
“It was funny at first, but you can’t keep doing it.”
He added, “I have four kids and one on the way. Just don’t be disrespectful.”
The chant referred to WNBA star Angel Reese, who is known for her record-setting rebounds at LSU.
The fan apparently used the chant because Green had grabbed multiple rebounds but had taken few shots.
Official Intervention and Fan Perspective
Courtney Kirkland, one of the game officials, told Green, “I got it.
I’ve heard him over and over and over again.
You’ve handled it well. Don’t get yourself in any trouble. I’ll take care of it.”
Despite warnings from arena staff, Sam Green was allowed to remain in his seat.
He later described the incident as “a little unnerving” given how close Green had come toward him.
Coach Steve Kerr Weighs In
Warriors coach Steve Kerr expressed that he had no issue with the confrontation as long as it remained controlled.
“As long as it doesn’t escalate, it’s fine for a player to go over and have a discussion,” Kerr said.
He did note, however, that it “would have been nice if security had gotten there a little bit earlier.”
A History of Fan Tensions
Draymond Green has a reputation for being fiery and confrontational on the court.
He has previously faced fines for engaging with fans, including a $25,000 penalty in 2022 for using obscene language toward a spectator.
Green has often criticized fan behavior, noting that spectators frequently face minimal consequences while players risk fines if they respond.
Green on Fan Disrespect
“I love disrespect on the road because we win a lot,” Green sai
d. “Quieting a home crowd is always fun.”
Despite the tension, the Warriors secured the win, and Green’s focus remained on the game rather than the confrontation.
