With NFL training camps just around the corner, most teams are finalizing rosters and planning strategies—but one familiar name won’t be joining the Kansas City Chiefs this time.
Wide receiver Justyn Ross, who was part of two Super Bowl-winning rosters, has officially left the team.
The 25-year-old reportedly asked to be released, and the team agreed—just days before their training camp kicks off on July 22.
A Super Bowl Journey Without the Spotlight
Although Ross was on the Chiefs’ rosters for their back-to-back championships in 2023 and 2024, he never got the chance to showcase his skills in either Super Bowl game.
Still, being part of a winning organization was a valuable experience.
Now, Ross steps away from Kansas City with the hope of rejuvenating his professional career elsewhere in the NFL.
A Career Derailed by Injuries and Setbacks
Ross’s NFL journey has been anything but smooth.
Injuries were a constant hurdle—he underwent surgeries on both his spine and foot while with the Chiefs.
These medical issues undoubtedly limited his development and playing time.
Adding to his challenges, Ross was briefly in the headlines in late 2023 after being arrested in Kansas for criminal damage.
Fortunately, the charges were dropped the following month.
On-Field Stats Show Untapped Potential
Despite his time being marred by injuries, Ross still managed to record six catches for 53 yards, all during the 2023 season.
While these numbers are modest, fans of Clemson football remember how explosive he was during his college days.
At just 25, there’s still a real chance he can carve out a meaningful NFL career—if he can stay healthy and land in the right system.
Chiefs Focusing on Rebuilding the Offense
Kansas City’s offense struggled at key moments last season, especially in the Super Bowl where they were overwhelmed by the Philadelphia Eagles.
Head coach Andy Reid is now focused on refreshing the offensive unit for the 2025 campaign.
The team dealt with several injury setbacks—Rashee Rice missed most of the season due to an ACL injury, and Hollywood Brown was sidelined after undergoing shoulder surgery.
Tight end Travis Kelce also had an up-and-down year, but he’s reportedly been grinding hard in the offseason to bounce back strong.
New Faces and Big Contracts in Kansas City
There’s a lot of optimism about some of the newer additions to the team.
Xavier Worthy, a first-round pick from 2024, showed steady improvement as his rookie season progressed.
Meanwhile, Jalen Royals, the team’s fourth-round pick this year, is expected to add depth and speed to the backfield.
One major headline this offseason was the Chiefs locking in Trey Smith, their standout guard, to a record-breaking four-year, $94 million extension—the largest ever for an NFL guard.
Season Opener in Brazil Sets the Stage
Looking ahead, the Chiefs are set to kick off their season in grand fashion—with a September 5 matchup against their AFC West rivals, the Los Angeles Chargers, in São Paulo, Brazil.
The international stage will be the first test of whether Kansas City’s new-look offense is ready to make a statement.
As for Justyn Ross, the next chapter of his journey begins now.
Will a new team give him the chance to fulfill the promise he once showed at Clemson?
NFL fans will be watching closely.
