College football fans are buzzing this week as Vanderbilt storms into the AP Top 10 for the first time since 1947.
The Commodores’ dramatic rise comes on the heels of a chaotic weekend where nine teams ranked in the Top 25 suffered defeats, forcing a major shakeup in the latest poll.
It’s been a long time coming for Vanderbilt, but their performance on the field is finally commanding national attention.
Ohio State Stays Dominant at No. 1
Despite the upheaval, Ohio State remains firmly at the top, holding the No. 1 spot for the eighth consecutive week.
The Buckeyes made a statement with a 34-0 shutout on the road against Wisconsin, earning them 60 first-place votes—10 more than last week.
They are proving once again that consistency and dominance on both sides of the ball keep them at the pinnacle of college football.
Major Top-10 Shakeup
Outside of Ohio State, the poll underwent significant changes. Four top-10 teams lost in the same week—a scenario that has occurred three times this season—and four of these defeats came at the hands of unranked opponents.
Overall, nine teams in the Top 25 went down, the highest number since Week 5 of 2022 when 10 lost, according to Sportradar.
Indiana climbed to No. 2, surpassing Michigan State and achieving a program-record ranking, while receiving six first-place votes.
Texas A&M jumped to No. 3, marking their highest ranking since 1995.
Alabama sits at No. 4 with its best ranking of the season, and Georgia returns to the top five after a brief three-week absence.
Rounding out the top 10 are Oregon, Georgia Tech, Mississippi, Miami, and Vanderbilt.
Vanderbilt’s Historic Rise
Vanderbilt’s climb isn’t just numbers on a page—it’s history in the making.
The Commodores’ recent 31-24 victory over then-No. 10 LSU was their first win against the Tigers since 1990 and propelled them seven spots upward in the rankings.
Currently at 6-1, Vanderbilt is off to its best start since 1950 and has already notched wins over two ranked opponents.
Adding to the excitement, ESPN’s College GameDay will visit Vanderbilt next weekend for only the second time ever, further cementing the school’s newfound prominence.
Other Notable Movements
Oregon bounced back strongly from its loss to Indiana, trouncing Rutgers on the road.
Georgia Tech’s win at Duke lifted them back into the top 10 for the first time since 2014 and gave them their highest ranking since 2009.
Meanwhile, Mississippi slipped three spots after falling to Georgia, and Miami tumbled seven spots after losing to unranked Louisville.
Texas Tech experienced its first defeat of the season against Arizona State, falling seven spots to No. 14. LSU suffered the biggest drop, plunging 10 spots to No. 20, marking its lowest ranking of the season.
